Writing an Untamed History

In this class we will read, write and discuss several ways to approach historical writing— this might mean the deep past or your own personal history. Fiction, poetry, and memoir writers of all levels welcome! The class will be tailored to the needs and questions of the students. We’ll explore several strategies and styles:-Character and Persona-Obsession, research and writing what we know-subverting stereotypes and the difference between truth telling and finding truth. Bring a fast pen and all your burning questions! This class will run 9 am to 12 pm at the Montrose Field House, located at 25 Colorado Ave Montrose, CO 81401. Tuition is $45.

3rd Annual
May 18-21, 2017 10:00 am
The Telluride Literary Arts Festival

It’s high time the Telluride region celebrated its avid joy of reading and the passion for good ole fashioned books. The result features everything from performance poetry and literary burlesque to a book lovers bash and hike-to readings. Events for the kiddos, too!

The Telluride Literary Arts Festival is for readers, writers, and lovers of books! It is a celebration of reading and writing and an opportunity to get together to affirm this great pastime. Complete with performance poetry, author talks, literary burlesque, moderated panel discussions, and even events for kids!

Unique to the 2017 LitFest:

It’s a bit early to have information about the 2017 Telluride Literary Arts Festival, but it’s not too early to book lodging. Many veteran festivarians book their condos and hotel rooms a year in advance and the town of Telluride is mostly sold out six months before the festival! Come back later for more information on this festival.

Visit the Telluride Literary Festival’s Website for more information!

Sexy, Subversive and Slant
The body is political. The unruly body stirs the pot. We will do close readings and undress several forbidden texts, poems you wouldn’t whisper in your grandmothers ear, taboo subjects that make the tongue sweat and the cochlea hum and burn. We’ll generate new licks from the edge, the odd glint where knife’s edge hits a strange light.

IMG_724413164407_1216286488395470_3421540007048277512_nLiterary Burlesque & The Rapture Dance Party
Featuring a troupe of regional female poets and writers who will drop layers, both literal and literary, this year’s theme, “Oh Sister, Where Art Thou?” plays off the Cohen Brothers’ famous film by a similar name—both of which derive substance from Homer’s Odyssey. Think of white tent revivals, jailbirds freed, and siren songs. On the latter subject, however, the original quartet of “Burl Gurrls”—Amy Irvine, Kierstin Bridger, Rosemerry Wahtola Trommer and Ellen Metrick—warn us not to expect being lulled to sleep. Rather, one can expect a wake-up call, an invitation, to step into ourselves, the intimacy with others, more viscerally. “This will be our tightest show yet, in terms of both structure and thematic material,” says founding Literary Burlesque director Irvine. “It will also be our most revealing—in terms of having built the muscles needed to dig more deeply, to dare more vulnerability with one another, as well as with the audience.” Craig Childs will step in as emcee-turned-southern preacher. Immediately following Literary Burlesque will be “The Rapture,” a dance party with cash bar, featuring KOTO DJ Radio Addiction spinning tunes. This could get primal, bring your inner beat beast. Tickets are $15 dollars in advance (through the Ah Haa or Between the Covers) or at the door, if not sold out ahead of time. FYI: This has been an SRO event for the last two years.

A student:

“To my absolute astonishment and delight, I am actually enjoying the revision process with this poem. I think your encouragement has a lot to do with that motivation and I am so deeply grateful. I could sit or walk with you for hours and talk poetry and writing. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
